Thullal is the dance-enactment of a theme conceived in a single act. Based on the attire of the performer and also on the salient aspects of the songs rendered, thullal could be classified into Parayan, Siithankan and Oottan. Kalakkattu Kunjan Nambiar , is the founder of Thullal in its present from.
Here one could feel the simplicity ,of folk arts, the slaughtering satire in Chakiyar kuthu and the musical essence of Kahtakali, all in a single dais.
Unlike other keralite performances, there is no stage exclusive for thullal. Usually a mat is spread on the floor and the performer enacts there. The instrumentalists are seated behind the artist and the music thus supplements his oral rendering.
The salience of the art form is its elaborate costume arrangements. The black, beautiful hair worn by the performer is tufted in a piece of black cloth A crown resembling the form of naga(snake.) is worn and the face is further adorned by green balm. The eyes and eyelashes are decorated with designs that stretch beyond. The chunda flower is applied in order to redden the eyes, the pottu adorns his forehead . The performer puts on a garland and wears the kankana in his forearms. He also wears the kachamani in both his legs and the folds around his waist are dressed in a peculiar way.
ഏകാംഗനൃത്താഭിനയമാണ് തുള്ളല്‍. പറയന്‍, ഓട്ടന്‍, ശീതങ്കന്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ തുള്ളല്‍ മൂന്ന്‍ തരമുണ്ട്. തുള്ളല്‍ക്കാരന്റെ വേഷവിധാനവും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന തുള്ളല്‍പ്പാട്ടുകളുടെ നൃത്തവിശേഷങ്ങളും ആസ്പദമാക്കിയാണ് തുള്ളല്‍ ഓട്ടനാണോ ശീതങ്കനാണോ,
പറയനാണോ എന്ന് നിര്‍ണ്ണയിക്കുന്നത്.
ആധുനികരീതിയിലുള്ള ഓട്ടന്‍ തുള്ളലിന്റെ ഉപജ്ഞാതാവാണ് കലക്കത്തു കുഞ്ചന്‍ നമ്പ്യാര്‍.

പ്രത്യേകമായൊരരങ്ങ് തുള്ളലിനു വേണമെന്നില്ല. പായോ, പനമ്പോ താഴെ വിരിച്ച് അതിന്മേലാണ് സാധാരണ തുള്ളുക പതിവ്. മേളക്കാര്‍ നടന്റെ പിന്നില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്നു.
നടന്‍ ചൊല്ലുന്ന വരികള്‍ മദ്ദളക്കാരനും കൈമണിക്കാരനും ഏറ്റുപാടുന്നു.
നടന്‍ പാടുകയും ആടുകയും വേണം. വളരെ വിസ്തരിച്ചുള്ള വേഷവിധാനമാണ് ഓട്ടന്‍ തുള്ളലിനുള്ളത്. തലയില്‍ മനോഹരമായ മുടിയാണ്. അതിനുമുമ്പ് കറുത്ത ഉറുമാല്‍ കൊണ്ട് കെട്ടും. തലയില്‍ കൊണ്ടകെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കിയ വട്ട മുടിക്കെട്ടിനു പുറമേ വിടര്‍ത്തിയ നാഗത്തിന്റെ ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള കിരീടം ധരിക്കുന്നു.
മുഖത്ത് പച്ചതേച്ച് കണ്ണും പുരികവും വാല് നീട്ടിയെഴുതും. കണ്ണു ചുവക്കുന്നതിന് ചുണ്ടപ്പൂവിടും നെറ്റിയില്‍ പൊട്ട് തൊട്ട് ഉരസില്‍ കൊരലാരം, കഴുത്താരം, മാര്‍മാല എന്നിവയും ധരിച്ച്, കൈകളില്‍ കടകകങ്കണാദികളും ധരിച്ച്, രണ്ട് കാലിലും കച്ചമണിയുമണിഞ്ഞ്, അരയില്‍ ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതരം ഉടുത്തുകെട്ടുമായാണ് തുള്ളല്‍ക്കാരന്‍ രംഗത്ത് വരുന്നത്.
