There are various genres of music that range from entertainment songs to film songs to the more traditional ones like Carnatic music and devotional songs.
The music of Kerala is known as 'Sopanam'. The music acquired its name from 'Sopanam' which means 'Sanctum Sanctorum' of the temple. There was the practice of singing the sopanam music at the sanctum of the temple. Now it has grown as dance music in 'Ashtapadiyattam'.
Carnatic music dominates Kerala's traditional music. This was the result of Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma's popularisation of the genre in the 19th century.
Melam (including the Paandi and Panchari) is a more percussive style of music performed at temples using the chenda which comprises of about 150 musicians. Panchavadyam is a different form of percussion ensemble in which up to 100 artists use five types of percussion instruments.
Kerala has various styles of folk and tribal music. Besides this, there are certain songs that are sung during manual work like farming, harvestory etc to alleviate the burden and weariness of working continuously.
The popular music of Kerala is dominated by the film songs. Songs that characterize the nostalgic moods are of course in plenty.
