The film music of Malayalam has a rich tradition. Right from the first sound movie 'Balan' (1938), music had played an indispensable role in Malayalam films. 'Balan' had twenty three songs.
Even though the number of songs in films has since then decreased, film songs still play a major role in determining the commercial value of a film. The technique of playback was first introduced in the film 'Nirmala' (1948). Before that, the actors and actresses used to sing the song during the shooting time itself. So only those who had the ability to sing were selected to act. The heroine of the film 'Balan' M.K. Kamalam and the hero K. K. Aroor were the first singers of Malayalam cinema. P. Leela, Sarojini Menon, Gokulapalan were the playback singers of the film 'Nirmala'. Dakshinamoorthi was the music composer. There after all films have adopted the playback singing method.
All the earlier films simply imitated the popular Tamil and Hindi tunes. The famous poet Abhayadev wrote the songs for most of the films. It was after 'Nilakkuyil' (1954), that Malayalam films had its own film music.
P. Bhaskaran wrote the lyrics and K. Raghavan rendered music to the songs of 'Nilakkuyil'. Since then, there had been innumerable popular songs in Malayalam films. Vayalar Ramavarma, O.N.V. Kurup, Thirukkurichi Madhavan Nayanar, Pappanamcode Lakshmanan, Thirukkurissi Sukumaran Nair, Sreekumaran Thampi, Poovachal Khadar, Mankombu Gopalakrishnan, Bharanikkavu Sivakumar, Shibu Chakravarthi, Girish Puthencheri, Vayalar SaratChandra Varma etc contributed a lot of film songs through their beautiful and meaningful lyrics. G. Devarajan, M.B. Srinivasan, Brother Lakshmanan, Salil Chowdhary, M.K. Arjunan, B.A. Chidambaranath, M.S. Viswanathan, L.P.R. Varma, R. K. Sekhar, M.G. Radhakrishnan, Shyam, Johnson, Ouseppachan, Jerri Amaldev, Perumbavoor G. Ravindranath, Rajamani, S.P. Venkitesh, Vidyasagar, Mohan Sithara, M. Jayachandran, Jassi Gift, Deepak Dev, Alex Paul etc have created wonders through their music.
The songs of Kamukara Purushothaman, S.M. Raja, C.O. Anto, C.K, Revamma, S. Janaki, KPAC Sulochana, K.S. George, K.P. Udayabhanu, K. J. Yesudas, P. Susheela, Jikki Krishnaveni, Vani Jayaram, Shantha P. Nair, P. Jayachandran, Brahmanandan, L.R. Easwari, Latha Raju, Sujatha, P. Vasantha, K.S. Chithra, Krishnachandran, Venugopal, M.G. Srikumar, Minmini, Madhu Balakrishnan, Biju Narayanan, Vidhu Pratap, Afsal, Vinith Srinivasan, Vijay Yesudas, Manjari, Jyotsana, Shwetha Mohan, Gayathri, Rimi Tomy etc have enriched Malayalam films.
